Got some much needed work done on my back deck today. 2 decks on my house and I about have them both ready to re seal. Back deck gets killed by the sun all day, much more work keeping it maintained.

Third straight day of rain and thunderstorms. Even had a few tornadoes which is no surprise for this time of year. Rain is supposed to continue thru tomorrow evening then we'll start drying out tomorrow night and over the weekend. At least we'll get to start summer with a surplus so when it gets really hot and dry the lakes and whatnot won't suffer as bad.

Such a pain of a process, buying a house.

It's all relative and if you have a good agent it makes it a lot easier.
Title: Re: May got here to quick!
Post by: tomtraubertsblues on May 02, 2019, 12:55:22 PM
I found it a pain though I had a great agent. Just the sheer amount of nonsensical government interference.

Lots of calls in the air but it will be worth it in the end. Iíve got a pit bull of a realtor. Canít wait to have a heated garage to work on the Samurai!!!!!

Congrats heavysquad. Around here you're not touching that house and garage on that much land for at least a minimum of 500k probably closer to 750k to 1 million I bet. Shit, a one bedroom studio apartment rents for 1000 to 1500 monthly here. I honestly don't know how most folks make ends meet around here.

Over 4 acres and heated barn here would break a few million. Its crazy. Go 100 miles west and things go back to normal for now lol

I bought the cheapest house in a nice neighborhood but 2 bedroom is not wise if you need 3 lol its actually cheaper by me to add rooms than buy a bigger place haha... at least for now. Our noble governor is going to give 99 year leases on our tollways which will obviously end great...

Is government or banks?   Most of the extra stuff we did was because the bank wanted it.

Spent the day chasing a driveline vibe. Only under power, have it narrowed to either the tranny or the intermediate shaft. Going to rebuild the shaft. If it's the tranny...time to get a tracker 5 speed and set up a doubler.

I put the second can of Rustoleum Peel Coat on the hood. Can't get it to gloss at all. And then added my Skull Washer sprayers that one way have the eyes as sprayers and front side the eyes are red LED's they are cool! Refilled the front diff yesterday after having to work like a dog to get the stripped (prior owner) fill plug out and replaced.

All good. Have a great work week ahead.

Most likely liquidating some toys and Samurai parts to help with purchasing this house. Iíll start a different sale thread if people are interested. Iím kicking around the idea of selling my 1.6 8v to a guy with an efi samurai. What would the tracker efi manifold and ZOR harness be worth? Since he doesnít need it.

I do. Going to drop in a rebuilt motor and transmission. Rebuild my xfer case with 4.16 gears. Replace the radiator. Replace all brakes components and install braided steel lines. Replace wheel bearings and rebuild front knuckles. Replace rubber seals around doors and windows. While Iím at it Iíll probably clean up some electrical and other stuff too when the motor is getting swapped. I imagine this will all take most of late spring and summer to complete.

I put a new soft top on mine. Black denim, looks great. Right now Iím spoa on 33s might go down to spring under axle and 29s so I can drive it around town. Pretty busy so itís doubtful. Might leave it alone and hope to get 2 good days out of it.

Long term plans include
Electric fan
Install oil pressure gauge
Different air intake, tracker intake right over the headers canít be good.
Patch the rust holes in the floor
Install the sport cage
Install some better seats
Weld a new rear spring perch on the rear where it is rusty
Clearance the wheel well to fit 33s spring under axle
Make a functional dome light
Wire in some better speakers
Paint it

get a new soft top
put in my rusty 4.16 transfer case gear set
install the windshield fold down kit
Tune it up so I get more than 16-18 mpg
And maybe paint it or put on a digital camo wrap

Think I'll go roll around in the woods awhile today.

Nice how far do you all drive to get to trails?

The forest is in my backyard, my place is on the boundary but I drive around about 2 blocks to access the forest roads, unless I take my quad, then I just roll out my back gate.  :-)driving

Man that's awesome and I bet a great way to relax

Yes, I love it. Would be tough for me to live somewhere else now for sure. My location makes my backyard especially enjoyable.

I live in town currently and itís handy and a nice place to walk around. Going to be a big change to move out into the woods, walking the dog will be stressful with roads with no shoulder.

I usually figure out what I want then shop online and locally to find them at the best price. Wally World is good sometimes because they offer a lot of brands online and will usually ship them to a local store for free for pickup or install if youíre so inclined.

I'm pretty sure if you find the best price on what you want Discount Tire will match the price if it's any easier for you that way. You have to figure any shipping charges into the price per tire for the price match.

I ordered some fancy towels for my mom for motherís day. They came with the security tags still on! Bed bath and beyond is an hour away. I thought Iíd hold the tag in the vice and hack saw through the needle that goes through the towel. Nope, just crushed the tag in the vice. Now Iíve got to wrap them.

Long term.

Finish engine swap and megasquirt project
ARB in front and rear.  Maybe 4.3 hybrid axle, not sure i want 30" tires though
Maybe some twin sticks

Oh and I might do electric power steering someday.  Right now i have no need, but i hear a front locker makes streering rough.  Plus I'd like to get my kids driving the zuk early

This is a T@B clamshell 2 person camper. It is like a teardrop that is tall enough to stand up in. They had a flaw from day one that allowed rain to seep in and rot out the wood floor. The aluminum wasnít strong enough to support the shell and broke. Previous owners ignored the problem and the rot continued up in to the walls. I cut out and replaced the bottom of the walls and purchased a new floor with fiberglass construction.

first post this month. I read all of the posts.

I am trying to sell my first house. have been for a while. going to try selling a different one this time. should be easier to find a buyer.

I have not pulled my samurai out of storage yet... still. I even have a brand new ZOR bumper in a box waiting for it. Shameful.

Planted 145 trees while I was home. black walnut English walnut, hazelnut and american chestnut. trying to diversify the trees along the trails I have been working on. might be cool someday.

My wife bought a new to us Honda Rubicon that is getting a lot of use.

I sold my 85 Honda big red... sad day.

Baby horse was born last week. looks like we are going to name her whiskey. Very nice color and temperament so far. the new baby persons name is Riley. whiskey and rye...

I am back at work where maybe I can get a break.

porosity. What process? lack of shielding gas is most likely the cause, maybe. unless your trying to weld over non metal material. what does it look like when you grind them down? Swiss cheese?

Anyone know the benefit of running 8 shocks like this? Just a pic from craigslist I saw

Letís people know you have more money than they do. ( or had)
Or perhaps more money than good sense.

maybe the extra shocks are for redundancy. I broke a front strut in the north Maine woods on my 01 subaru and had to drive 60 miles on dirt roads with the front flopping around. would have been nice to have two at that time.

Dual shocks have a place but it isn't on a ZUK like this. If you had a full blown full time 4x4, desert runner or rock-crawler yes but on a mall crawler, NO.

I have not successfully rebuild a stock carb. when the first one started acting up I spent too much time troubleshooting and eventually threw it in the trash. will be the first thing I do next time I have a samurai with a stock carb.

I screwed with my stock carb for the best part of a year before I called MY and got me a myside 2 and 44mm. I would get it to where it seemed like it was running great then a week later I would have to mess with it all over again. It was like a never ending cycle. Learned my lesson.

The only gripe that I have is how long it takes my engine to warm up. The choke stays on for quite some time. I ended up drilling a hole in my thermostat last year 1/8" relief hole for air bleeding when I resealed the housing. Don't know how much of an effect it had.

at one time I thought that having a carburetor was the way to go. because I can fix a carburetor on the side of the road... I did not want a computer controlling my fuel... when I bought my first EFI Harley I changed my mind. Fuel injection is way better. the amount of carbureted stuff in my yard is slowly decreasing

I ask about the carb because my samurai starts and runs pretty good but it stutters at full throttle (feels like not enough gas, or maybe too much) and I get terrible gas milage, about 16 mpg. It could be as simple as the jets are worn or a really complicated fix.

I was also wondering if it could be the timing or maybe be in desperate need of a valve job.

Quick poll, how many original miles do you have on your ZUK? I'm mostly interested to hear from those with their original 1.3 who haven't been rebuilt (which may be a rare breed).
Me personally, just over 267k.
Title: Re: May got here to quick!

I've got 117k miles, previous owner said the engine was replaced at 85k.

My odometer says 44531, now, has it rolled over once or twice already. Original 1.3 not rebuilt. Still runs great and decent, even compression numbers last I checked. It has also had 31" tires on it for several years which will skew the odometer reading. And of course the myside 2 with 44mm and turbo and 4.9 t/case gears really woke it up.

I have a small pop up camper and asshole neighbors. To get through my gate I swing a foot tops onto their lawn but pulling it alone is impossible on grass(trailer not me) pavement easy. We have two little kids running around itd be nice to move it alone but also am skeptical of the torque this would need to produce- rc car stuff is triple this lol

My odometer says 64,000, and that made sense with the registration before I got it but I think the hundred thousand number is anybody's guess. Looking at the engine, I don't think it had been rebuilt.

Backing up a trailer hitched to the front bumper can be a little tricky the first time. Especially with a loader on a tractor, because how far the front swings as you turn, but it is way easier to put the trailer wherever you want. I have a hitch on the front of my Tacoma with a winch bumper, I have used it to load trailers, works well.

Solid wheels are definitely the way to go for anything like this. Not sure your location... If I was to solve this problem I would find a snow blower and cut off the blower. weld a ball like the dolly  on the front and then you can drive the trailer around all you want. if you get lucky you can find one with power steering for a couple hundred bucks. put a cup holder on it and you can move your trailer without taking a break from drinking beer.

Steel rims with cheap flat rubber tires that are flopping around and falling off also suck going over rocks or flat surface. All this talking about manual labor. I hate the idea of pushing a trailer. unless your training for a strong man competition, there are ways around this. have to work smarter.

Share pictures. should be easy enough to find one that drives good with a broken blower. I bought 2 last summer fully functional in the $300 range. one of those things that if you buy lots of them in the summer and tinker with them you can make money in the fall winter. like snowmobiles and motorcycles...

haven't posted in about 2 months, got kind of burnt out on it every day. Then, i smoked my front R/P and started checking out prices on ZOR. Just saw that the 6.5:1 tcase gears come with a $293 gift card?! that's a hell of a deal!

Iíve been surprised about the cost of some aftermarket parts.   They seem very responsible,   Especially since samurais are not on every corner anymore

Nice evening here considering the weather we had earlier today. Hope everyone's enjoying their evening!
Anyone here have a rallytop hard-top for their ZUK? I'm thinking about buying one before the end of the year but wondered if they're worth it and if it the initial install is a pain.

I have the two piece sport back on mine. I like it and initial install was easy, but it was hard to get the front piece to seal around the windshield frame. Takes a bunch of RTV and then you really don't want to take the front off. I take the back off and use the front like a bikini top.

Too bad that bikini piece doesn't seal better. That's the type of hard top that I'd want to get. I'm really tempted to get that Canadian-made one if I ever get one.

On the other hand I'm trying to remember that there are better commuting vehicles than my Samurai to use, lol.

It's actually not that much more than the other hard tops, just buy when the exchange rate is right. From what I've seen it is a superior made top and the way to go.

My garage isn't big enough for what I've got going on. Constantly lumber and other repairs going on for rental properties, plus anything else that needs repaired. I could use a full shop, not a 12x20 garage. DId I mention it isn't insulated and not heated?

I really like it brighter but like the grid layout of parts better than the list style.  At least that's how it looks on my Samsung. It's always a hassle changing things up but in my opinion you need to either:

Change background to anything but white and keep current part pics

Or(more work)

Take new pics of parts with a white background

Sounds silly but goes a long way

If I was knowledgeable in that stuff I'd love give real advice lol. Your product and brand speak for themselves I think a before and after area or your parts in action page for people to share can pick up steam as you'd have wheeling pics out there as ads

I like the website. I am not real picky i guess...

Also have CBs in my vehicles from when a lot of my neighbors had them. There is not one in my samurai. Murs radio is more important for truck traffic in the woods. I like the CB because I can talk to my friends in tow trucks and dump trucks when I see them. maybe 3 times/year. I had a 8' whip on my sidekick when it was on the road. It made it resemble a RC car.

We had CBs in high school before cell phones. Still have mine. No good place to mount it in a samurai. Going to mount it overhead when I get my roll cage built.

I wasn't serious about it and would mainly just see who was out there but a few I can remember that I used were Texas T, Roy Batty, Silver Surfer, Little Enos and Leatherface.

I have a technician also. Callsign is KE0DQT.

I was going to ask how people have mounted radios. The obvious place is where the AM/FM radio is, but then ya can't listen to tunes. That is just unacceptable. I was debating just having an antenna mounted somewhere and then wire it up to a handheld for vehicle radio ops.

On the trail or in the garage repair? I agree with heavysquad about driveshaft, 8 bolts and done. But, I don't know if very many folks are carrying spare driveshafts on the trail, axles and u-joints probably. I don't really wheel hard enough to break either one myself. I think what you break largely depends on how your rig is set up, if you're doing a lot of rocks, and how hard you are on the skinny pedal. I guess common sense has some to do with it too. Just my opinion.

Think I broke an axle the other day, without tearing into it to confirm.  And i think a peice of metal got down into the third member and tore everything up. Drivers side spins freely no matter what when it's in the air. But driving down the road with the hubs locked in (after leaving the trail and going about a half mile to my brothers place) in 2wd, the passenger side front locked up and about pulled us off the road. The force of locking up the wheel tore something up in the tcase. I'm afraid to start working on it.

no I don't have time to venture out much. My samurai collection mostly just sees around the farm action. Plenty of area to roam right at the house. I would like to do more. I hope to start daily driving a geo tracker this summer, its kinda been on the back burner but its mint. has a stuck brake and exaust is has holes. it has done a lot of sitting.

First off... I am not a carpenter but since I have nothing else to say ill throw in my 2 cents

I was also not sure what you are building but if it has treads than I am assuming its stairs.  Is the 1" pine dimensional or rough cut? I don't see where having the stringers 1" further apart than standard would really make a noticeable difference. I usually use 2" stair treads but I also over build everything. outside or inside? If it was me I would not use 1" pine because its not real strong I think a missed step or fall could break a 1" dimensional pine board on a 16" span (like on the karate movies). would not be ideal outside in a horizontal plane be cause it rots fast. but maybe someone has a more educated response. I just wing it regularly.

If it is a full 1" thick finished southern clear pine it would be ok for foot traffic. Heavy concentrated loads like the small wheels on an appliance cart with a refrigerator on it may break the 1" boards.

The longevity of the materials is greatly improved by pre-finishing all sides and ends before assembly with the finish of choice (paint, stain etc).

i skimmed the post and saw stringers and not the part that said treads. i built pole buildings for years and thought you meant stringers as in purlins. 17 on center should be fine.

Inside stair case.   They are actual 1" inch pine.   Glued strips to prevent warping.   I cut andt laid them on the stringers.  They FEEL solid.   I guess my choices are:

A)  Install them, hope they inspector is OK with the install.   I can't find guide lines on this...

B) Get oak stair treads

c) Add two more stringers for extreme overkill

People arenít getting any lighter.

I'm not going to build my house for a 400lbs fat ass.  They probably wouldn't buy our house anyway, too many stairs....

I think an inspector may shit if he came to see my work haha. I am glad thats not a big thing in maine. I put the service in on my garage at my old place, that is the only time I have ever been inspected. I passed... Put the treads on if they say something then do what they suggest. spend the extra money latter if it becomes an issue. the extra 1/4 of board makes a big difference. I use 1" pine for roofs and floor boards all the time, have not broken one yet.

I am a big, its my house Ill do what I want kind of guy but I know that is not acceptable in other parts of the country.

Wait to reassess until you decide to sell unless you are looking for money back from the bank. At least that's how its done up here - add value on your dime then tell the bank and get a check when your taxes go up if you plan on selling

I believe that 10% under is an I am serious about this number. I have low balled a lot of properties. Sometimes you get a counter offer. sometimes you don't. My first house I paid 20% under asking price right after they dropped the price 20%. After that I made a lot of ridiculous offers. if it s an investment... whats to loose. last place I paid 9% under. If I would have known what I know now, I would have paid a lot more. So far selling real estate is way more stressful. I have been waiting 3 weeks for my agent to list the house I spent all of my time off getting ready to show. Its taking her longer to list it than it took me to go through the whole place, cleaning, paint, trim... My samurai roller is still in that garage, I need to find a new place to store that.

Yeah. technically it was a 17% drop in asking price but pretty close to 20. final cost was 49% of their original asking price. Guy thought he was going to get rich. stayed on the market for a long time and When I saw the price dropping steady I low balled it and he was desperate to get out of it. worked out good for both of us, maybe more so for me well see... trying to sell it now.

People do ask about the samurai rolling chassis... I am two atv projects and a snowmobile project away from that sitting in a spot where I can work on it. I have to do it soon be fore I forget where i was going with it.
