I am looking at setting up a zipline for my oldest boy to go across the pond where he has his "fort" set up and likes to play. there is a decent rock ledge with about a 15' drop on one side and a flat grassy area on the other.  researching spring stops and retrieval set up. Looks like I can have him remove the trolley and walk it back to the start or set up a "clothes line" pulley system attached to the trolley to pull it back. He leaves his stuff everywhere so if he has to walk it back up it will be lost in the woods somewhere.

Sorry I've been out of contact lately, a lot of driving in no cell service and camping w/o internet access.

Also, dodging hail storms on the motorcycle isn't fun.

Twin sticks for May? 2-low would come in handy on most of the trails I'm able to go on these days with the clearance I have, if they ever open up the trails. Way way way too muddy.

Got some more maintenance done today:

Replaced the brake fluid

Replaced fuel filter

Checked the hubs to see if they need grease. YES, they were pretty dry, and the passenger side wasn't sealed and is all rusty inside.  bang The wheel bearings still have grease, though. I'm debating whether to do the passenger side wheel bearing because of the moisture in the hub area. Maybe I'll drain the front diff fluid out and see if there's any water first. I honestly think it's fine, but I'm not positive.

Thoughts?

Cross water=dif fluid change + remove hub locks to check grease. Otherwise a little water causes problems.

$15,000 which may not sound like much, but there are several issues with the place and we worry there could be more.

Many use a hose hooked onto the vent  and move the other end of the hose up higher in the body etc so no water gets in the vent.

I want to earn enough to have fun with hobbies and pay for life insurance until I croak. Sounds morbid but it is the best investment because you (impersonal, all of us) will be toast one day. If you are somebody who is nervous about their kid's judgement having cash go living will smaller amount and go nuts leveraging everything.

To me retirement is having the kids covered if I'm out before they are self sufficient and in a position my nut is covered till 75

Think I have a leak in my brake lines. I noticed a weird stain on the cement in the area of the right rear corner when I got it out of storage. The brake light has been on and I assumed that it was the sensor on the ebrake handle. Turns out, the reservoir was empty! Half a bottle of dot3 and the light went out!

I'll bite - how old are you and what is passive income?

I'll be 35 this year; my goal is 40 but plans may change of course. Active income is something where if you stop actively doing it you'll stop making money. The easiest example of this is anyone who has a job. Essentially you're trading time for money, right. I trade my time (8 hours per day) at so much an hour, the minute I stop coming to work is the day I stop being paid.

Passive income is somewhere you make money even if  you're not actively working on it. Stock/bond investments, businesses you own, and rental real estate are good examples of this.

In my case, I have a couple residential rentals. I live in one half of a duplex and rent out the other half, the last house I lived in also is a duplex and rented half of it out while I lived in the other half, and I also have a 4-plex apartment building. The cashflow is the money I have left over all expenses. In other words, my profit.

The ultimate goal is to have your passive income exceed your expenses for a given month, or even to replace your active income.

How much time do you think you spend on the average month maintaining a rental?   And how much do you clear each month from that rental?

How much time do you think you spend on the average month maintaining a rental?   And how much do you clear each month from that rental?

I don't spend any time on them anymore. I hire it all out; it's a must if you wish to scale at all. Especially since I'm married now with a pregnant wife and have a 40 hr a week job to boot.  A good rule of thumb for mutli-family is about $100/per unit per month. I have one that's around that or a little less (there's a specific reason I've got it this way for now), and the one duplex is about $500 of cash flow. As for the duplex I live in, the rent covers over half of the mortgage payment. When I was in the other place, it covered 90% of the mortgage payment. There's more metrics to look at if you really get down into the weeds; ROI (return on investment), cash-on-cash return, and so on. Not to mention the tax advantages. As a W-2 employee, those are some of the highest tax rates; the tax code is set up to favor businesses (like it or hate it that's the way it is). I end up paying an effective tax rate of under 10%, which makes an overall difference, too.

There are three things to make it with real estate, 1. drive, aka hustle 2. Capital, aka money 3. Knowledge. The great thing is, you only need TWO of those things; the other can be gotten easily enough. The biggest limitation for people is capital, as it is for myself. There are ways to use minimal of your own capital or even none to buy places, it just takes some creativity.

Put my Ct70 back together, the bike started! Looks like exhaust is leaking from the head and the fuel line clamps I used arenít tight enough. Or the fuel line is too thick, I hope tighter clamps will fix it.

Money wise or idea wise?

I always pictured a small RV cruising but now leaning more towards a solid home base. Mostly for hunting

A little of both.   Mostly estimating what Iíll need in savings.   Will I blow more money because of more free time?  Spend less because I have more time to do things myself?

That's a good point about spending more with less to do I never thought about it that way.

Eliminating chunks ot debt feels good but so frustrating when its financially not smart. I also get paid in chunks and not guaranteed so I tend to spend wisely and quickly lol

I would love to get ride of debit.  Instead we are gambling on the stock market.  Maxing out the 401ks, and buying into a roth if we anything left over.  We havn't made an extra house payment in years.

Retirement? Whatís that? I hope to soon but I am so wrapped up in ZOR and itís getting a lot easier as the team gets bigger and more good people have come on board. Many hands make the load lighter and all that. Seriously, planning is the most important step towards financial independence. You canít make plans without knowing the details. Itís important enough you should start understanding market, real estate, consumables strategies. The last thing you want is find out your retirement nest egg was lost when you have no time left  to replace it.

In addition to money investments, don't forget to invest in the people around you. Unless you go quickly the odds of losing a lot of whatever is left on medical bills are pretty high. Family used to take care of you but now it seems paying somebody else is the norm. With people turning away from churches or any other community and spending more and more time online that's becoming the only option. Then at the end you're broke and lonely.

Zero debt and it feels GREAT!  We paid the house off about 5 years ago (30 year mortgage paid off in 20).  3 months later, we made the final payment on Amy's 2012 GMC Terrain and recently traded it plus cash on a 2014 Jetta Sportwagon TDI.  All the other vehicles were paid off long ago.  All that was going toward payments now gets added to our travel/vacation funds or gets added to our regular retirement investments.  The only thing that would tempt me to go in debt again would be a large (100+ ac.) recreational land (hunting/wheeling) purchase.  We currently own 14 acres with the house and shop.  I had the opportunity to buy an adjoining 110 acres a few years ago and still regret not doing it.  We had just become debt-free and I didn't want to go in debt again.  But, it would have been smart debt and easily paid off with a timber thinning in a few years.  Still kicking myself over that one.  But, we're in a good place financially right now for when/if another, similar land deal comes along.

Debt isn't always a bad thing. It's simply a tool; it just has to be used correctly and responsibly. I seriously urge anyone who wants to learn more to play the game Cashflow 101 from the Rich Dad company. It's Robert Kiyosaki's company (author of Rich Dad Poor Dad).

For example, if you use someone else's money (debt) to make money for yourself (a cash-flowing asset), does it matter how much debt you have (within reason)? With rentals, your tenants are paying that debt, you control the asset, and the lender takes the risk (an oversimplification). It's just a property. If a tenant trashes it, there are ways you can be made whole from the damages, and it can almost always be repaired.

The key is to not become emotionally attached.

I've been in the middle of performing some maintenance on my Sammi. I went to service the hubs only to notice there wasn't any grease left and the passenger side had some moisture penetration. The o-ring failed letting water in. This led me to take things apart further for inspection; I didn't have any problems but seeing that moisture made me think at a minimum I might have wheel bearing grease contamination. I also pulled the knuckles out to inspect the Berfield joint and replace those grease seals; they looked like they'd never been replaced. Those looked good, but what a mess cleaning all of it up! The passenger outer wheel bearing has some discoloration so I'm going to go ahead and replace that outer bearing as well as the inner wheel bearing, too. No water in either differential and it came out golden-colored, so that means that it had been changed fairly recently. Downside was someone really put the drain plug on tight; I had to use a 1/2" breaker bar to get it off.

I need to
Install power steering pump
Check fluids

Remove wheels and check that the spacers are torqued down
Remove driveshaft
Attach tow bar
Stick on tow lights
MAKE SHURE I BRING MY WINCH CONTROLLER

Finally got the last load of stuff to the dump today after re-roofing my house. There's always some jackass when I go there. I pulled onto the scale to pay and the guy behind me didn't understand how scales work I guess, so he pulled right up behind my trailer on the scale. I do this too usually one Friday a month but cleaning service by me is super cheap because there is a lot of competition:) no naked people have arrived yet lol but the wife really loves having someone else clean. I thinks it's a psychological thing more than the actual dirt removal lol

I was going to flat tow and read a bunch. According to the internet parts I found, if you tow for a while you still need to stop every few hundred miles and start it up to keep everything cool. There's a huge debate and stories of helicopter shafts destroying people's toys but I'd remove it just not to think about it. Hopefully when I'm done I can drive to,  wheel at, drive home from the trails

What's everyone's opinion on the 1.6 swap versus a myside kit on a 1.3?

I went whole hog and went 1.6 8v new petrowerkes gas tank, had MY make my harness, ZOR motorboats to keep the hood in the same place. I like it, store it all winter and it starts right up.

Personally I don't feel it's worth it. If you're 1.3 is toast and you need to replace it then maybe but I wouldn't take a working 1.3 and throw it out for a 1.6. There's a lot of information you can research on this forum and others about this very thing if you look.

the reason I ask is that someone on Facebook marketplace somewhat close to me is selling the entire 1.6 swap for $400. engine, harness, computer, and adapter plate kit. info says they were going to do the swap and then sold the rig before they could. Everything I see is that the 1.3 is a better motor, but for 400 bucks i thought it might be worth my while to look into it.

For that price it's definitely worth considering.

Ya, I should say, I had low compression and it was expensive and time consuming to do the swap.

I believe the general consensus is the 1.3 w/turbo is better than the 1.6 swap as far as overall, for amount of time and money spent. Now 1.3 w/turbo vs 1.6 16 valve, I'm not so sure about.

the motor for sale is the 16 valve.

I think there is a lot to be said for fuel injection.   That would be my  reason for wanting to switch to the 1.6

What are the downsides of a turbo on a 1.3 with a myside?  Dream list has a 1.6 16 but if turbo on my existing 44mm is close I'd be willing to pull out the eraser

I would install a myside kit over and over before dicking around tuning a carb. I went through that with a 4 stroke dirt bike for a summer and drove me mad

The first few hot days take some getting used to. It was a cooler winter and spring lasted forever. Itís a real shock to drive down the 2,000 feet elevation from Verde Valley to Phoenix. It will be over 100 for the next 3 months down there.
Short staffed again. This time in office. Almost a decade now of needing more people than we have.

Yeah the heat is going to really start ramping up here too. We've been really fortunate to even get a spring here along with a lot of good rain. Normally we just go from winter to summer. If I was in AZ I would consider joining the team in some capacity. Hopefully you can find some passionate people to onboard.

Letís see how it went today
Got to shop late.
Doing friend a favor installing a drive shaft I rebuilt for him and he was missing a few bolts. After we played musical cars. He came back with bolts and we installed, after playing musical cars.
Loaded 3/4 ton pickup onto trailer and unlocked hitch came off ball destroying the  tailgate of my truck  and ripping electrical plug off. Blew fuses to boot.
Broke both fenders on trailer.
Took truck to MVD and parked it. Proceeded to walk over to ACE and bought some hardware.
Went to MVD to get bonded title on said truck. Gal wonít climb on trailer so I have to unload truck and drive into inspection bay.
Truck wonít start after VIN inspected and I am blocking the entrance and exit to inspection drive through bay.
Ran Vin canít find correct owner have to write certified letters.
Go try to put the truck on trailer, no keys. Go back into MVD find keys load big truck onto small trailer. Lose another ramp to weight of said truck. Throw ramps and blocks and straps into bed of truck.
Get back to shop try to unload said truck,  no keys lost them
Unhitch trailer go  looking over 10 miles of highway and roads for keys.
Get to MVD figure I would ask if they have lost and found.
Wait in line, get to counter ask about any keys need ID
Go to truck get ID
Wait in line, my turn, band lady my DL, ask about keys. Nope no keys
My truck has a hard time starting (fuel shut off relay)

Get back to shop here about engine warranty claim-lost all profit on sale over a plug. Paid $300 to install a plug. Customer happy
Things not going well at shop.
Hot
No one feels like working
Might lose some key people to better job opportunities.
On phone with close friend in hospital, not doing well.
Get to do it again tomorrow
Yea!

Has anyone put 4 door Trackkick brakes on a Samurai? I've read of it a few times, the biggest change would be a larger caliper and vented rotor.
Title: Re: Oh summer days!
Post by: zorproducts on June 13, 2019, 09:50:40 AM
Yep
We cut the back of the shield lip off as the rotor is so close to the fold. You need the brackets from the four door that hold the calipers. The bleeder valve is wrong place so air gets trapped. You take a block of wood and set the calipers with bleeder yo and bleed before bolting around the 4 door rotor. Works well

Yea the day in and day out of Trump bashing is really old especially when you have lists like those below that show how dedicated and passionate he is for our great country and ensuring that Americans come first. I'm actually quite surprised by that tweet, didn't know the likes of Rhianna could actually form a thought or articulate that well.

Purchased my ticket to Hemmonds off road park, got my waiver notarized, reserved a campsite, but, I couldnít get my Samurai ready in time. Perhaps if I could have had more than 2 hours to work on it this week, I could have finished installing the power steering pump. Between buying a house, getting my friend into rehab, settling my grandmothers estate, opening my widowed aunts camp, girlfriends birthday, motherís birthday and a busy time at work 2 hours was all I got. Not happy but that is life. Iím still going, Iíll be in my friends rigs.

Well, there's your problem there... going to parks. :)
I don't remember the last time I camped in a park or in a campground. I prefer dispersed camping at least but really anything away from other people.

dispersed camping is pretty competitive with three hours of me.   You often need to pitch a tent on tuesday or wensday to get a really good spot.  I prefer backpacking anyway.

True! I'm actually going to a place that may be pretty crowded unfortunately :(

Backpacking is my go-to for sure but haven't been able to recently.

Well Iím home. Had a nice weekend despite not being able to wheel my Samurai. We camped at 2 lakes campground which has some small sites right at the beach. We had great weather.

We wheeled at Hemmonds MX park. It is primarily a motor cross venue but they have a days worth of trails cut and are cutting more. All the trails are well marked and rated green to black. We are definitely going to go back again.

I have a Citizen eco drive watch that I like a lot. It is my only watch with a sapphire face. I don't think I'll ever go back to regular glass. If your looking for a mechanical movement, it sounds like they take some maintenance bit I only have a cheap one I don't wear often. I also wear a Samsung smart watch regularly, the best parts of that are that I'm less likely to miss phone calls and I can use it to pay anywhere.

I looked at Samsung but it's too attached for my taste. The wife has a Fitbit or whatever and already seems distracting. I'm reading up

Watches: I always wear one. I'm not attached to my phone, and can't have it in the building I'm in. I have a Timex Ironman that has been great, but my wife gave me such a hard time about having a 'non classy' watch so I finally got something 'nicer'. A Victorinox Officer's. It was one of their lesser expensive models, now discontinued, that I had to get off eBay. But I'm 'classy' now! I own a Swiss watch. It's got sapphire crystal and quartz movement. If you're looking for a mechanical but don't want to spend a lot, check out the Seiko SN807. I'll probably pick one of those up eventually because the mechanical watches fascinate me.

I spent all afternoon yesterday trying to get my Samurai put back together. Most of the axle is done except for the hubs. And I have a little interior assembly to finish up. I'm trying to have it so the in-laws can take it trail riding when I'm at work during the week.

Wristwatches are cool but I now find them annoying. There was a time when if I forgot to put mine on I'd feel weird all day without it. Stopped wearing one years ago except for very one-off occasions. Pocket-watch is my go to.

Do you guys have tools that are always on board? Space is tight and going to start prioritizing what I need and what I think I need. So far trail repairs required two flat head screwdrivers and a Gatorade bottle. Since the myside went in those aren't necessary anymore lol. Maybe I should practice with the multimeter

Man healthcare is a mess

Guy on the street with a broken limb or stabbing as an example vs knowing preventative care is covered by a bunch of people that went through a process you chose to skip

I see it as a jeep owner posting 1000 times on this thread in a row because we have informal rules, winning a winch, and telling us all thanks for keeping up the post count and to go pound sand. All reward with no skin in the game

I agree about the 80's stuff.   A lot of great vehicles from that era.

Yes I enjoy a lot of the styling ideas across so many industries- makes me wonder if it was a special time or just my youth and subconscious playing expensive tricks Haha

I think I like stuff from the 80s an odd amount more than new

Agree with this but would choose early- mid 70s dead to anything 80s if I was on an Island blah blah blah

So while wheeling this weekend, I ran into a group of 3 Samuraiís. All were trail only rigs with home brew 4 link setups. One guy was driving a rig he had just built. He lost the rear output flange on his tcase. He could make it 100 feet and it would fall out again. Luckily, he kept finding the nut and was able to screw it back on.

Hey I think I just stumbled upon a great idea. Why not giveaway participation trophies for the giveaway threads. That way, all those who love a good participation trophy can add to their collections and for those like me, we can use them for target practice, hood ornaments or paper weights. Everyone is happy, YAY!

Wow. That's some mud right there alright.

Yup! Was a wet spring and I think they got a good soak 2 days before we got there. We didnít get to do that trail because of the stuck samurai but I think that was the worst spot. We walked in to see how they were making it. Could hear the high revs needed to get through it .

loco
So while wheeling this weekend, I ran into a group of 3 Samuraiís. All were trail only rigs with home brew 4 link setups. One guy was driving a rig he had just built. He lost the rear output flange on his tcase. He could make it 100 feet and it would fall out again. Luckily, he kept finding the nut and was able to screw it back on.

That looks like a fun day! Any pics of the other ones? There are no samis by me. If I do spot them they are not pretty and definitely no mods

Only got 1 as they were coming off their trailers. There is a 3rd Sami behind the Toyota.

Those look like fun:)

Everyone just takes and takes and takes
You didn't know that? It's the new democratic/liberal world order and pledge! Brought to you in part by the participation trophy generation!
Don't do for yourself- just take from others!

Got the Samurai back together (for the most part) last night and test drive appeared successful. I only half put the steering column covers on (they're a pain), and my intermittent wipers are still finicky and I lost one of the little balls for the high beam detent, but I can do that at any time.

I worked pretty hard to get it ready for the in-laws, let's see if they appreciate it.

Everyone just takes and takes and takes

All statements that begin with generalized all inclusive terms is false. Including the one I just typed using the word all. There are some generalized statements that are true.

Most everyone
Almost everyone
Nearly everyone
Some
A large percentage
A small percentage
But everyone?

I think the rock smasher is sweet and I'm glad that ZOR offers it. As far as your situation goes, probably not bad per se. From your posts it sounds like you do some decent wheeling though so you'd probably be doing yourself a favor beefing up your steering linkage.

LOL, back in the early days of samurai after-market parts the answer to everything was an extended drop pitman arm.

I'm pretty sure those guys eat some serious dust, or, they have to ride way spread out. Bunch of my buddies have sxs's and none of them ever leave the driveway without goggles and a bandana covering their faces. Always come home dirty.

I've never done it. Haven't even ridden with any buddies. They can go fast and a smoother ride I'm sure. But, I don't eat dust, have a nice stereo and a.c. and my ride isnt really bad by my comparison with my modified Tacoma.

All that said, I'm sure it would be fun. Just not my cup of tea. Those things are noisy too. Also, depending where you are going, it's gonna be hot 🔥 this weekend. Supposed to hit 110į in the Phoenix area this weekend I believe.

Super liberal family moved in across the street. Not judging they are super friendly but the type I feel like I will have to bite my tongue around lol

Just cough a lot around their kids, probably not vaccinated. That should scare them off.

Wait, Republicans are the stereotypical anti-vaxxers.

It looks dusty and will be crazy hot - they leave at 6pm and call it a sunset ride or something. We will be in north Scottsdale area.

Back to power steering and ac conversation from a while back - would a turbo on a 1.3 make a difference to have both or is it unrelated power? I don't know anything about turbos

I saw owners manuals mentioned a couple pages ago. Where can I find one for an 88 samurai.
Try acksfaq or google

I have tried both and I have the service manual. I'm looking for an owner's manual and can't seem to locate one to download.

'Itís one way to state what I found as I tried to solve a riddle'

Cool argument starter...

I think the big flaw with comparing how we have evolved is balancing social, technological, and availability of resources as opposed to measuring in years and absolute figures

Yes. always watching for the right bolt pattern. Those will look good on a samurai. Most of the time the Bundle adds on FB are the best deals. they don't want to take the time to list things individually.

I do. Have a few things to get heavy stuff up high. Also have a lot of guys that rent out stuff. We have a smaller crane truck we may have to sell because Chicago is adding more red tape and throwing 25k fines around like candy if you dont have a license that doesnt exist yet
