Title: August entered the building!
Post by: zorproducts on August 01, 2019, 12:29:39 AM
Last monthís Giveaway thread had tons of interesting events in peoples lives. Perhaps it helps us become more tolerant of those we communicate with?

ZORum didnít get any complaints from any one about being treated unfairly due to: no rules, no regulations, no restrictions, no even playing field, to anyoneís July postings.
Freedom marches onward into August.

July Winner was on page 31

I looked at page 31 for winner clues but came up short

Good morning... Today marks the start of my 15th year with my current employer!  Worked in a grocery store through highschool and college.  After college, spent 4 years at a defense contractor, 7 years with a natural resources management company, and the last 14 years with Nucor Steel.  That 15 year milestone means that, starting in January, I'll get another week of vacation added to my annual allotment.  Wooohooo!  More wheeling time starting next year!

Maybe it's time to plan that trip to ride with Zuks of Arizona...

So my 2006 new girl at the time - now wife and amazing mother - decided to finish school, moved to st Pete beach fl.  I have fished my whole life but only freshwater.  There is catfish in the channels between islands. Look very similar to those anywhere in the midwest except have a toxin on two side spikes and one dorsal. They are a good fight and I'm sure some may eat them. Rumor has it if you bust their head open there is a cross shape in the skull which some collect.  I was never that hungry or curious at that age.  I did not know about this toxin till I can home and was numb from the elbows down and went online lol it was a funny night

True story, my grandpa got stuck with a catfish barb when fishing once. He had a reaction although not too severe but he developed an allergy to wasp and other stings after that event and had to keep an epi pen on him from then on.

Does anyone else work in a field they never saw coming?

Most of my work anymore is IT/admin stuff.    I was an electrician who took a job programing PLCs and sensors.  .   Then i was given responsibility of a SCADA system which has grown to have a domain controllers, and all sorts of other junk.   I keep thinking about going to back to being a plane old electrician, but it's big pay cut.

Yes and your story almost exactly mirrors mine. Before I was a mechanic who happened into an opportunity literally days before packing up and almost moving cross country. I do find myself job/opportunity searching for something more simple again but as you mentioned, I would have to pretty much cut my pay in half.

Thanks yíall for the congratulatory messages!

Anyone got exciting plans for the weekend? I'm hoping I can get some trail riding in on the dirt bike.

I can estimate I have over 20k miles of dirt bike riding used to race enduros back in 80s. Was mentioned in cycle mews once as the newcomer placed 16th out of 750 entrants. In 93 hit a rock weird and did an unplanned table top maneuver at over 80 mph. Saved that one. Putted to the truck loaded up and sold the dirt bikes after a decade of racing. Donít miss it much.

Anyone have a preferred hose clamp?  I have had a couple mechanics/mill writes wear by the gates conical constant tension ones.   They just seem heavy and stupid beefy for a little samurai.  I lean towards the stock ones, but they are too small for aftermarket hoses.

If i buy a new torque wrench it wont be craftsman.  They used to be my go to brand, but I'd don't like the choices they've made to stay competitive.

2 truck loads of gear hauled to the new place. One of which was my grandfathers ďRadioShackĒ a nice plywood desk with shelves set up for his Ham Radio gear. Almost too tall for the barn.

I always wanted to race when I was younger but never was able to get into it. I ended up not taking the dirt bike out, but the Samurai with the dog. Managed to get stuck in a rut while trying to avoid a bigger rut; I was able to get out after a spell.

I like hanging drywall, I don't like mudding I am not good enough at it to be happy with it... I like things to be perfect so i spend to much time messing it up and getting frustrated. I am much more of a tongue and grove pine kinda guy. my last house only had drywall in the bathroom and that was my wife's idea during the remodel.

Same here. I can hang it with ease but when it comes to taping and bedding then mudding, nah. If you've got a mud gun it's not so bad but even then it's difficult for me to get it consistent enough for my liking.

It can be a grind. making the same trip every 3 weeks gets old sometimes. I have been doing this for 11 years now. It is less exciting than it was. The helicopters are nap machines, I usually sleep for take off and landing and all in between.  I have never had a normal job so I cant compare it to working 9-5 or whatever normal people do. I do move around quite a bit. I usually stay on one rig/drill ship for about 2 years then move. Working in the Gulf of mexico is nice because it is close to home, easy commute and a real consistent schedule however, The day to day drilling operations is not my favorite. I have had more fun working on new projects, I am trying to get a spot on a new build in Singapore now I don't think I know the right people but I have been trying to find them. I have worked on 3 projects like that, 2 in Singapore and one in south Korea. I like what I do most of the time. Mostly the troubleshooting/hydraulic system maintenance. there is a lot of real big iron. I do a lot of pressure testing to as much as 15,000 psi.

Went to trade school for welding and pipe fitting, while working construction I realized all of the people telling me what to do were from maritime academies. after learning wtf a maritime academy was I went to Maine Maritime academy. I hired on as a third engineer, basic power plant and hotel service operations and maintenance. I got into working on blow out prevention equipment because it sounded interesting. that's the short story.

Just an underbelly skid plate to cover the snatch cradle. It was thrown in the back of the sami when I bought it and I finally dug it out and bolted it on.

100+ every day this week and for the foreseeable future. Going to have to work on the sami during mornings and evenings as my shop isn't cooled and airflow is just ok. Got some fans that help but during the middle of the day- you're just asking for a sweat-fest.

Skid plates sure are great for protection, but  they can be kind of a pain in the butt when it comes time to remove them for maintenance. My quad and pickup both have them.

Nature of the beast, I guess.

Title: Re: August entered the building!
Post by: yourhero6605 on August 06, 2019, 05:53:51 PM
I probably wouldnt have spent the money on a skid plate, but since it was in the back of the sami when I bought it I figured I'd put it on. Just four bolts over the frame, 2 mins to remove. I didnt like the idea that if I high center on the snatch cradle it would put all the stress on the 3 points that the cradle is mounted. Just a little extra protection.

I use a guy a lot who is getting a ton of work blasting with dry ice and ice. Everyone wants no mess now lol. We still have him sandblast and strip brick but I'm sure the city will put an end to that soon.

If you can provide a good service with low competition you will be set and work will come if there's a need. If you will be bidding out against a lot of people I'd own as much equipment you will need to avoid renting.  My 2 cents but go for it!

I'll take failure over regret any day

Threw in some 6.5 tcase gears and rebuilt everything.  It was a first for me so it took me longer than it should have but thanks to the awesome customer service of Myrone it got done and got done right. I have been really enjoying my dirt bike project that might turn into a restoration if I am successful piecing together the transmission. Its a one year bike and parts are not available. Swapping gear sets and bearings from other years without certainty that it will work. Cleaning and Painting as I go back together with it. I should just put it back together, sell it and focus on what I've already started.

That sounds like a great idea. Also sounds like how I work on my projects anymore. Seems it takes me longer than I'd like to get some things done sometimes.

Itís a good thing to be busy itís a bad thing to take months to get orders done. Oh well all that can be done gets done.

Computer based maintenance program.   Something that makes you look less productive, but makes you LOOK more productive because itís documented.

The scale of preventive maintenance and documentation required makes it necessary to have the computer based maintenance programs. For instance, the hundreds of oil and fluid samples we take monthly and send into town for analysis. The results are uploaded under the equipment tags and if any of the test results are out of range it flags that sample and creates a job for us to address it. our old system was very out dated, but it worked. Hopefully this new system will work better but Its hard to learn new things. The new system is going to integrate out parts inventory and purchasing system also.

I use a backhoe for engine hoist. Before that I used wooden a-frame and come along. Engine hoists work better Iíve never had a working one. I bought one at a farm equipment auction a few years ago. It does not work itís in lower field along the tree line aging.

And I bought a harbor freight press to do my case. Worked perfectly. Obviously doesn't get used often but sure is nice when I need it, I don't have to hunt one down or pay a shop. Don't forget the 20 or 25% coupon if you go harbor freight.

I had this happen to me. An all-of-a-sudden layoff. It was terrible and took me over a year to find something decent again for a job. After that I vowed to not be in a position such as that again; THAT is why I started with rentals.

sounds like fun, I would bet those 4 seat side by sides probably make real poor mountain sleds. Most of the local snowmobile clubs use small trucks or SUVs with tracks for pulling groomers. They break trail with sleds first generally. I have a couple of miles of trail on my property with access to the main trail system that I try to groom and a 200 yard sledding hill for the kids. My little 300F tundra is screaming for mercy. I can buy tracks and use my samurai or one of the track-kicks for the same price of a larger utility sled like a skandic. one less thing to maintain and I get to use my samurai in the winter. Its hot, I am thinking about snow.

Just going back with stock 1.3 8v and transmission. I already have 4.56 r&p installed in my diff's and will be rebuilding the xfer case with 4.16. I considered doing a VM diesel swap but I really like the simplicity and reliability of the 1.3 and didn't want to get in over my head. That and I'm pretty much restoring mine minus the paint so budget is going to lots of other parts and pieces that need to be refreshed.

Thats great. I really like the 4.16 gears in the xfer. I went with the 16v sidekick and i am kinda wishing I stuck with the 1.3. But maybe when I work out all the bugs and such I'll be happy with the swap. With the donor vehicle I was able to do 5.12 r&p so that was good!
The dream would be doing a frame up restoration on mine. A lot of "repairs" I did when I was younger are proving to be a pain in the butt.

And the stuff MY is putting together really makes the 1.3 so much better.

More Data entry... should be done tonight,

In my experience:  I have a few friends who are good at wrenching, better than me... they are also more busy than me with their own problems. We help each other out but Its not like I can call them and say hey come fix this for me haha. Just like me, they piles of broken stuff and a list of work that's never complete.

one of my first engine swaps was in a 94 Oldsmobile with a 3.1. I was working in Connecticut about 6 hours away. I bummed a ride home on Christmas eve, pulled my car in, swapped motors, drove back to Connecticut the next night for work at 6am the day after Christmas. after the test run... and fluid check... I loaded it, drove it out of the shop and hit the interstate. hardly had enough money to put gas in the tank but I was having the most fun.

Similar experience here; had to do my first motor swap over the course of a day. Was my only transportation at a time when a day of missed work meant Iíd no longer have a job. My aforementioned buddy and I went to a wrecking yard and picked up a motor from a 2 year newer truck than mine, started in my driveway at around 10am and by 4pm we had it swapped and running. Good times!! Iíve since returned the favor and helped him with some projects and weíre still good friends to this day!

Had the 3.1 V6 I belive it was a 94.5 model cutlass supreme. I had put a set of cheap spark plugs in it and the #1 cylinder plug broke. Wasted the Cylinder. I bought another 3.1 from a buick for 400 bucks

So I have a vacation to China including Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong in a week. Any suggestions for a substitute to the Hong Kong portion? It'll be an expensive change but with the airport shut down I don't know that I can get there anyway.
I guess it depends on what you are traveling there for, i.e. what you like to do on vacation. Maybe try Chengdu or somewhere in the Sichuan province. I say that cuz that is where I want to go... well, Sichuan not particularly the city (i prefer country side to cityscape). You could possibly extend your stays in other parts of the country?

I called about changing tickets today and it is $400 per person. I think I'll try my luck and wait a few days before I change them. The airline is only waiving change fees through Thursday. What draws you to Sichuan?

one of the oil rigs I worked on had some original manuals from when it was built in 1984. the Compressor manual had drawings of girls in bikinis working on the compressors. I will try to share them when I get my hard drive it was pretty comical. Wish everyone did not have to be so PC all the time at work. They even recently took our ability to have our own screen savers on the work computers.

My little boy is always "helping" me in the shop. He brings me the small wrenches and says, "Mine." everything that is smaller is his haha.

A vacuum brake bleeder is pretty helpful if you are always hunting someone to help with brakes. They are not expensive.

I will be hunting. My favorite time of year. I am buying a scope for my marlin 35 Remington this year, I am thinking this will be a good brush gun. I am pretty excited about it, want to shoot it a bunch and get it set up before fall.... coming right up.  My go-to rifle is my old open sight model 94. however in low light situations, like some of the mature soft wood stands, I could gain hunting time by having a low powered scope. Not really interested in the side mount on the 30-30. I have been using my 30-06 because it has a scope but its a little over kill for the short range hunting that I am doing around my house. The deer I shot last year almost ran me over. could have thrown a rock at it if I had one. Saw some monsters on the game cameras in the early winter. they made it through last hunting season. maybe Ill run into one this year.

This is real similar to the vacuum bleeder set up I have. If There is someone standing there, I use them to pump the pedal but if I am alone This works.

A Marlin 336CS in .35 Remington was my first deer rifle.  My dad saved up green stamps and got it in the early 70's when I was just a toddler.  I killed my first deer (a little basket rack 6-point whitetail) when I was 14 with 00 buckshot from my grandfather's H&R single-shot 16 gauge.  After that, dad started letting me use the Marlin.  I killed lots of deer with it over the years.  Sadly, it, along with all my long guns, was stolen in 2003.  It is a great brush gun, very effective within 100 yards.  Though, I took deer with it out to 180-200 yards (clear shot, no brush).

I will be hunting. My favorite time of year. I am buying a scope for my marlin 35 Remington this year, I am thinking this will be a good brush gun. Good day gang. For sure I'll be hunting. Drew an archery antelope, rifle coues whitetail, and a fall turkey tag this year. No elk tag but even when I don't draw I usually have a buddy or 2 that did so I still get to hunt elk every year. Archery elk in the rut is the best.

I've also been asked along on a desert bighorn hunt in December, in the unit I harvested my ram in a few years ago, as part of the support crew. Desert bighorn is once in a lifetime in Arizona so it's really cool to have the opportunity to go on another hunt.

Aim small miss small!!

Of course we eat venison, I'm not hunting for a trophy.  Sometimes the deer are fat but it's usually really lean meat. Just cook it rare and you're good.  Tiny horned creature? Did he show you a jackalope?

Maybe I should start a thread on this.. has anyone made a hay trailer out of a samurai frame to haul behind their samurai? Is that a sin? I have a couple parts samurais in my collection that I am sure will never run again and I cant see needing the frame and axles for parts later. I think I could weld a hitch bar pivot point to the top of the front axle housing and attach a shortened drag link to it so it steers with the hitch. I want to make a Hay wagon for hauling people around. or whatever else I may need to put on it... like hay.

I would feel less bad about cutting up my old sidekick... but I have never seen a hay wagon with IFS.

I tried selling a frame a few years ago, couldnít get anything for it. If itís perfect Iíd hold onto it.
Title: Re: August entered the building!
Post by: shawnevans77 on August 17, 2019, 02:51:46 AM
Its definitely not perfect. Body is completely trashed. Frame is rusty but not junk. I have no idea about axle condition, I have only moved it with forks under the frame rails. I have 2 that are in this condition, the other one drove on the trailer 6 years ago. has not ran since. Very rusty. I was buying them at junk price then. they came with a 3rd that has a mint frame an decent body Was pulled behind a camper, not drove in Maine. I am building that one... very long term project.

Coming up on my last week at work already.

I have been looking at Jeep frames, I don't think I want to spend the money on a jeep frame with axles. Ill have to keep looking. I like the idea of having something small enough to fit everywhere the samurai will. and that used the same rims... I have friends in the junk business. I might be able to get something that will work cheap enough that I wont have to cut up a samurai. there is a CJ5 frame and axles close to my house for $350

I could just buy a hay wagon frame but they are not cheap either and are much bigger. with no suspension. I want to haul people. when we have gatherings everyone likes to go for a ride around the place and I have been over loading my ATV bus seat trailer.

Been off the grid for 4 days camping with no service. Been nice. Right before I left, I had a car full of guys parked in front of my no parking sign smoking a meth pipe. Called the PD who showed up within 30 seconds. Talked to them for about a minute and they drove off. Guess I'll go back to handling that sort of thing myself.

We have had a lot of cut backs and lay offs. they expect more work faster with less people. with the newest equipment we are pulling it off... Its not helping our case and everyone is feeling the strain. you can tell from here.. they cant in the office, They just see the cost savings and pat each other on the back, then put out surveys when people start leaving to find out why haha.

Have you relayed that feeling to management?  At times of success (doing more faster with fewer people), management can easily get blinded by the bright lights and deafened by the pats on the back.  Good managers know this and are always receptive to input from observant team members.  Good managers also know that their most valuable asset is their team.  Speak up and let them know your concerns.

Real estate agents... never met a good one.

Management is more concerned about taking care of share holders. Large disconnect. Concerns are expressed regularly. Director of operations for North America was here last week. He said, stock is low, suck it up. In different words haha.

I've been there a couple of times in the Beaufort area and really enjoyed it. Always thought it was cool how there were pines right up to the beach. Don't forget to pick up some boiled peanuts if you see someone selling them roadside; they're delicious =P

Congratulations, nice work.

Are the sound proof headphones for you? or for kids entertainment? I carry ear plugs with me all the time, mostly because usually I am doing something loud, but my wife gets mad at me when I put them on in the car to maintain sanity over the racket in the back.

Taking the girls old car in for an inspection today. If it passes, Iíve got a winter beater. If it fails, demolition derby car. Hope it passes! 98 Camry with 182,000 and a good amount of rust. Spent the first 15 years parked on grass under a tree right next to a road that gets a ton of salt.

I have had rentals for 10 years. I don't make a lot of money off of them but They are creating their own equity.  Its a easy tax write off. I have had great tenants and been able to choose them by not charging the highest going rate in the area. lower rent gets good long term tenants. Everyone is happy.

Havenít welded for awhile my welding is getting better. Training a new welder and hired a guy starting next month has lots of Toyota experience. Yea long time to get this guy. it seems everyone claims to be a welder, but good welders are hard to find. They are usually the ones last to admit they know how to weld.

I have been working with a welder from Trinidad, they just finished up a bunch of HP stainless piping. makes me jealous, I wish I could weld like that. top notch.

Other than sports, the west coast gets a later broadcast of weekly tv shows. Central time must be the best for tv. Lots of stuff goes way too late for me.

Got the ps pump back in, except the nipple for the feed line from the reservoir is 1/2Ē and the old was closer to 9/16Ē and the line that was on there was 5/8Ē hopefully I can find something at the store closer to 1/2Ē and stretch it over the nipple on the reservoir. The nipple from my old pump wonít fit on the new one.

Wish I had a parts place like this. These guys bitch about his prices but I think itís priceless. Not this much knowledge behind the counter anymore.

Around my house. I have not gotten bored on my property yet. Iíd like to do more trips in the big woods or out the studmill rd. Maybe when the kids are older. I used to do a lot more trips up north in my Tacoma. Hard to get away

Already picked up around an inch or so of rain but still raining and have more coming. Really nice as we've had no measurable precipitation here since the first of July.

Pretty sure a lot of this is due to people who don't know how or care to wheel respectfully and not tear up the land. I'm not a tree hugger but going on someone's land and doing rooster-tails in the mud and rutting it up is not cool.

We had a baby shower yesterday; we now also officially have over 100 blankets for our baby when she comes in November.
Might want to trade some of those in on diapers.
Yay - 20 minutes to go til the work part of my Monday is over!

The wife has pre-bought diapers, I think. We had a ton of stuff on our registry list but people only got a few items, and parents didn't help too much. Same story as with our wedding, we have to front everything ourselves!

I get very irritated from people that act like douches on trails, too. The 'cool' thing to do around here is to go trail riding and get all drunk. You can imagine what type of things happen.

Trying to get back on days. Not real successful so far.

I feel like I was mostly respectful to other land owner. When I was younger and wanted to go off road. But the big problem is the mud riding. My land is not posted but I would be really upset if someone came through in the spring and tore it all up. Iíve had the 3am drunken adventures showing up to my house saying they are lost.

I cut some more rust out of our Sidekick. It was worst than I thought. Next year I'll have to weld new rockers in. The driver's side is almost completely gone (covered up by the ground effects) and the passenger side is half gone. I'm working on some spots behind the rear wheel this fall.

Been a rough but mostly productive day. Set out to rebuild the valve on my whole-home water filter. Thought I had bought everything I needed ahead of time but found a check valve that wasn't expected and needed to be replaced. Guy I bought the setup from was open but is approximately 35 miles away so headed over to get the valve. Got within about 5 miles of his shop and the clutch pedal in my daily driver lost all pressure. Had to slam it into gear and limp into a parking lot. Checked fluid levels and for leaks and didn't see anything. My guess is it's probably a master or slave cylinder. Called insurance and got a tow and then called my wife to come pick me up. Waited for 1.5 hours for the tow truck to get there and get him squared away on where to take it. Wife runs me to the water filter shop which luckily we make with 30 minutes to spare before they close. Get home and then do a marathon to finish rebuilding the valve, roll the tank (full of water and 40# of carbon) out of the well house, strap it to a dolly and then get it on an incline where I can empty the water and old carbon out of it. Once done flushing got it filled with new carbon and installed well filter valve/control head then back in well house and plumbed back into service valve. What a day, I'm beat!!!!

So my friends came up and we messed around with the samurai. We tried a mishimoto power steering reservoir that claimed to have 1/2Ē inlets and outlets. Which is way too big for the outlet but the replacement bars didnít come in the mail so we used the tracker reservoir and stretched some softer hose that had come off a power steering setup from a parts rig. Drove about 20 miles and that hose failed. Was fun while it lasted.
