Looking at a place tomorrow that needs a ton of work. Flip side is it's big enough to live in one half while I fix the other. I'm a fan of lowballing and hoping something sticks.  Oddly I don't nickle and dime with fun stuff

Almost lunch time. Sitting here shopping around for a water inlet (log) for the sami. Not sure if my old one is still in good shape or not but I'm guessing it's OK though as its never leaked. Probably just need to get a new o-ring for when I do my motor swap.

Once youíve had it it youíre usually immune for 90-120 days. Depends though too on if itís flu A or B in which case not so much.

Hope youíre feeling better though!

I put my samurai away in the winter. Every year I look at tracks and cant justify the expense. I may leave my samurai out until it snows this year. The snowmobiles wake up from their nap soon. I don.t do much wheeled travel in the woods once there is snow on the ground. I make a lot of plans to work on it every winter but I have not done that yet.

Watching barrett jackson auction. Some cool old 85 and 86 toy trucks were sold. One for $15k and the other $25k which is crazy. Those always remind me of the truck Marty gets at the end of back to the future. I so wanted one when I saw that movie.

we talked about this. for the price of tickets to Houston we could all go somewhere else. where I would not be working all day. a more fun or interesting destination. I have brought my wife to Houston in the past and its fun for her to get away but its not a real great place to visit. I ususaly stay in the hotels by the airport and she just stayed in the hotel for the most part. As far as my daughters first birthday haha... That is for my wife. I think 1st birthday parties are pretty ridiculous. I did not even know when it was. I thought she was born in April haha. 100% all about the parents. the baby does not know any difference. she wont miss me being there. She is pretty much attached to mom (food) still anyways. I am gone a lot and I am not sure she realizes who I am.

I get to go trail riding on Sunday with the dirt bike so I'm excited (only 2nd time this year). The Sammi isn't relegated to anything but road use until I get another tire. We had a big blowout last time we were out and I only have 4 tires now, not 5. So I won't go on fire roads or trails until that's rectified.

fight it... the local car dealerships could pay for the salt 20 times with the money they make from the damage it does. would rather they use sand/gravel and replace my windshield every year. It does help keep the roads safe but at a huge expense.

Rattle can works better than I'd have thought but has its limitations; one of those being doing a whole body panel.

Post by: Bad Goat on October 05, 2019, 08:24:29 PM
There are some rollers that do a pretty decent job.   A Industrial painter I knew gave me a box.   But Iím my limited experience nothing beats HVLP.

My experience is hvlp is good as long as you have a compressor with a tank large enough to run the gun, otherwise you spend a lot of time waiting on the tank to recover.   2 cents

HVLP works best with a turbine. Conventional guns are strictly compressor driven.

No turbine here. My experience is spraying finish on my woodworking projects with an hvlp gun and my compressor. Works pretty well for me. Of course the projects aren't Samurai size so that makes a difference. Maybe I should look into the turbine set up. For as much as I use it the hvlp gun and compressor do a satisfactory job and I'm pretty picky about my finish work. Hell, maybe I'm using the gun in a way I'm not supposed to.  :-)rofl. Seems to work ok for me.

High volume, low pressure. I haven't used it yet but I have a compressor and paint gun. I'm still debating between a wrap and painting my sammy.

I have an HVLP setup with the turbine from Harbor Freight. I bought it to use to paint an interior brick wall on a rental. The thing worked really great for that paint, I just had to thin it with enough water. I can't see why it wouldn't work on other surfaces, whether it is wood or even sheet metal. The setup was fairly affordable; under $100 on sale, if I remember correctly.

I have both a conventional and HVLP w/turbine as well as several airless rigs. Accuspray and Graco primarily. With the HVLP Iíve refinished cabinets and furniture and even sprayed metal filing cabinets so it has a lot of versatility. I used to sell and service paint, food and fluid management systems/equipment in a former life.

I go back in forth with this... I kinda want to find a winter beater. I gave my last one to my little brother and he totaled it this summer. With insurance and registration it cost me 500/year to keep it on the road. not including repairs. I paid 500 for it and ran it for 6 years. however Maybe I am better off just putting that 500/year into undercoating and maintenance on my (wife's) truck. I don't go far... just to the beer store occasionally. Ride around in the plow truck a lot in the winter anyways.

Yes, stock, not too much rust.

Shawn, Iíve got my grandfathers 04 Tundra and a 10 mile drive to work. It has only seen 2 winters and Iíd like to keep it indoors this winter. Even with fluid film they rust.

If it's close enough for shot to be landing on her property then it's probably not large enough to support a skeet club anyway.

There's a battle brewing now with regards to Huntsville Dragway (Alabama).  The track has been in operation for 50+ years and surrounded by open agricultural land.  In the last few years, there's been a couple subdivisions developed near the track.  Now, people living in those subdivisions are trying to get the track shut down.  Sad.

This kind of stuff irritates me to no end. People move to the area full-well knowing there's a track, then try to get it shut down. The thing around here is people do that with trails. Move to an area that's near the trails out in the country, then complain to whoever will listen to try to get the trails closed. Many trails were closed during the Obama administration (trails are on Fed land).

No pin :(
I do have a donor sidekick (I did the 16v swap) that I can snag the ecu connector from and then just run a wire from the connector to the Air Intake thermometer. But, I want to keep the other harness whole.

I found another 4 runner with a blown motor for $500. Was already salivating over the rims, grill and tailgate that I could use on my new purchase. It had sold :(

I agree this is a fun place to take a break and let your brain decompress- was just playing with the multiple posts because you may have taken last month lol

This will be interesting. I am excited to see what you come up with.

I ended up buying a set of lights to supplement (replace) my crappy headlights on the Sidekick. Police hassled me over my light bar last week, and the white light won't work the best in the snow. Got the set from Well Lit LED and I'll post pics when I get them on.

A lot, just been too busy and too hot for me to work on it. Plus, didn't have a few tools that I need to do the work. Still lacking a few. Been buying and stock-piling parts for a year now.
Basically though its: motor & trans swap which includes new clutch & flywheel, MS2 install, xfer case rebuild, snatch install, front knuckle rebuild, wheel bearings front&rear, spring perch replacement & u-bolts, all new brakes & steel-braided lines front&rear, window and door seal replacement, replace some aged wiring and of course, whatever else I happen to run into during the process of what I've mentioned that needs to be addressed. I know I'm forgetting something though.

Yessir, getting her back road ready and reliable. Still need a press. I'll probably go the harbor freight route and get their 12-ton H-frame when I have the $$

I'm excited and just need to get it done! Hard though given I'm doing this all myself not to mention other life junk/responsibilities and taking care of family/kids.

Maybe but I'm sure I'd have a future use for the press eventually. That and I have trust issues as there's not many people/shops that do quality work. Usually I get bit and then end up wondering why I just didn't do it myself to begin with.

No, its got some richmond 4.56 that I installed back in the late 90s. I may check the bearings though when I've got the axles apart doing the knuckle and wheel bearings. I suppose while I had it all apart it'd be a great opportunity to install a locker which I've always wanted to do but not sure I want to mess with it.

I rebuilt one and decided I didn't like it. I eventually bought a sidekick that came with extra stuff and was able to put 5.12 in the diffs along with a Spartan lunchbox locker. I took them and had them rebuilt. Eventually would like air or electric lockers for sure.

We got probably 6" of snow; had work canceled. I got some things done around the house that needed to get done and I had to make sure some 'new to me' items worked that I bought yesterday. An old Coleman 200 liquid fuel lantern and a 414 dual fuel stove. It's replacing a crappy propane one we have, and the lantern came with the stove. 1980 production for $50. Cleaned them up and they both work excellently.

A year ago we moved into a new house.  A week later next door neighbor got drunk, hit and totled my parked car and drove through the garage. Lots of damage.   Garage is still not fix 100%.   Oh and she totaled her Lexus as well.

Yesterday someone else who lives in the same house rear ended my wife on the other side of town.

Part of it goes around the neighbors land. Findlotsize.com says it circles 230 acres. I own 340 here. Surrounded by a lot more. A lot of it is old carriage roads. What Iíve been working on is just the best path I can make through the woods.

Horse show today. Took some visitors on a ride in the samurai around the new loop trail. Pretty successful. I need lower gears still. Itís a workout on the clutch to go slow over the bad parts.

I took my dad on a really rough trail. He said heíd rather walk :(

Yeah too rough of a ride makes the ride for passengers a lot less enjoyable. I don't mind, but when you're ahold of the wheel it makes a big difference.

For our situation, I'm seriously considering the 2" lift springs coupled with either 215/75 or 235/75 tires. I need tires anyway after our blowout, and there seem to be more options in the 235 size.

Thanks swayzee! It was a lot of work, but with the modifications we did we saved $3,100 minus how we repay our friends who did most of it. I am thinking we buy them a small dirt bike. When my buddy was young he had a 75cc Kawasaki and he would ride it constantly. He had planned on restoring and giving it to his son. Unfortunately sometime in college the motor went missing and he left it outside for years. I have it now and I a thought to try and get it back together. Well, parts are super rare. Itís not worth saving. Should really be wall art by now.

Nothing wrong with stock. I think high flow exhaust on a stock 1.3 or 1.6 is really a waste of money. Youíre not going to squeeze any extra HP out of one with that alone. Even coupled with a header, probably less than 5hp gain.

Yeah, I was a young buck. I did headers and high flow-cat. No clue if it added anything really.

I have the 1.6 now and got the headers because the manifold was cracked. Haven't really got it on the road... and being that its been 10 years or so since I spent anytime driving it I won't be able to tell any difference.

Nah, still a worthwhile upgrade just low on the list if money is tight and/or you're considering others. I have a header I bought from MY that's going on my rebuilt 1.3. For exhaust though, I'm just going with an aftermarket OEM setup I bought from rockauto,

5hp is about an 8% gain. It isn't noticeable on the samurai?

I just assumed he pulled the 5hp out of the air. Maybe there is data on this somewhere. But yeah, from 66hp to 71 would be pretty good actually. I mean, it won't have the same performance upgrade as flame decals, so whatever.

No science or math was used to come up with 5hp, just using averages.

I was simply trying to make a point that if youíre after a high HP 4x4, then a stock Sami isnít going to get you there no matter what you do to it.

I was looking at it from the perspective that a 5 hp gain on most engines won't be noticable but every little gain in a samurai would be.  Not that it would be powerful, just improved.

Get a decent gas shielded mig welder and watch some YouTube videos.   Youíll have it down in no time.
I think mig is the easiest to learn, and what I use 97% of the time.

Stick Is a touch harder.  But not something Iíve used since welding together armor kits in Iraq over a decade ago.

TIG is the hardest for me.   Itís a coordination thing.  You three limbs in use.

Welding is something that I'd like to practice at and get better at this winter. I know how to weld, done everything except mig, but it has been about 10 years.

Posts with pics in the help, how-to, etc. sections are great but I donít follow your logic here. For planting yes. Speeds up the growing process and allows you to discard those that wonít grow.

I have 3 black walnut trees in my yard, Iím going into my third year of planting. I have planted approximately 450 black walnut trees So far. Most are from nuts Iíve Collected. Learning The germinate process myself. We are on the edge of the range for black walnut. They donít grow very fast. My success rate is still fairly low. Last year was about 30%. Some nuts take two years to germinate so maybe that will improve. This year Iím collecting more nuts and still have maybe 600 from last year. Probably wonít live to see any profit from this adventure. I hope to tap them in retirement and make syrup along with the maples. Thatís probably optimistic. at least itís a free hobby. Does not cost me anything But time.

My light fixture project was a success! Everything worked splendidly and we can actually see now. In fact, I'm going to add one more in the kitchen area over the oven; this one will be easier as I'll tie into an existing light nearby and have it controlled by the same switch so no fishing wires through walls for me.

I did mine for quite a while. I'll drive it for a few weeks at a time here and there.

Whatís the going rate for having a driveway graded and extra gravel added?
Title: Re: October "OFFICIAL"
Post by: 1badmotorfinger on October 24, 2019, 01:55:30 PM
Here in TX, around $300 for the road base and grading. Approximately $200 for a bobtail of base by itself. Luckily, I have equipment available to me so I can grade myself.

Iíve been paying $13/yard for 2Ē minus gravel. Just bought a bunch of crusher dust for $17/yard. I also have equipment. Iíve never priced having it done but I bet itís not real cheap.

I usually grade at least 2x per year. Typically I add gravel in the spring after things are thawed and the roads are not posted. Fill holes from frost and add to the crown where needed. My driveway is half a mile with maybe 150í or more of elevation change... itís a decent hill.

Once again your place sounds sweet my driveway is 30' and barely off level lol

Temp drop has me thinking cold temps! This equals much less urgency at work.  Next 6 weeks I'm running like mad

Mine is a lot like what Shawn describes but a little longer; close to a mile. Itís a private road and I have one neighbor who isnít as far back as I am. Together we maintain the road and generally we grade/crown and fill holes as needed but really only once or maybe twice a year; unless we get a lot of rain.

Took my samurai out hunting for the first time last weekend. Had a lot of fun. Learned about running out of power long before running out of traction. Slid off the road and was worried about rolling down the mountain. Doesn't look like much but I could barely get in and out and when I jacked up the downhill wheel, both wheels picked up.

I got new pads put on the pickup last night. Took longer than it should have because of stupid aftermarket parts, but should be good for a long time.

I need to get the driveway at one of my rentals done. A load of gravel and then to move it around $300 for a truckload in town is what it costs here. I don't know how much it'd cost to move it around. It's about a 50 yard driveway.

I suppose that depends on how tall you are. I have the T&C seats, which sit higher than stock and I'm 5'9".  It is fine on the driver side but I need to recline a little on the passenger side. I also put the rifles in scope to the center and keep my neoprene cover on so they don't rub each other. It doesn't effect the clearance above your head but when your bouncing around you might have to worry if you were taller than me.

today they finally rolled out the new maintenance management software. Had some one on one training and completed a few simple tasks. well see if I can remember how to do them on my own. way more complicated than the old system. there is potential that it may make some things easier once we all figure it out.

When I took my samurai out hunting, I was coming down a steep hill and had trouble keeping the engine running. I've heard of this problem with the Weber carb but mine is stock. Is there something wrong with my carb or is this just not discussed much?
Title: Re: October "OFFICIAL"
Post by: shawnevans77 on October 31, 2019, 12:15:20 AM
When I had a stock carb I had trouble keeping the engine running in any position. I guess it ran ok for a little while. but when it started having trouble I should have swapped it out right off.

sorry for the not helpful post, I have not heard of stock carbs having trouble while going down hill. I have a 3k and they say they have trouble on hills, I have recently been up and down stuff that I feel is pushing the limit of stability and I have not had any trouble with it cutting out.

Both. They're almost taken together in my mind. Downside is, the commander of our base doesn't allow carry so I almost never have my gun on me. Almost everywhere I go is after I'm done with work on my way home.  BS

It's straight up winter here. We've had a blizzard already in the early part of the month, some highs in the 20s and lows around 0. I grew up in ND, and I can't ever remember it being this cold up there, ever this early in the season.

We're expecting rain/snow mix tomorrow, and snow on Sunday, too.

Happy Halloween, getting flooded with pictures of the kids having fun.

I love fall and winter. cant wait to play in the snow. I only hope it stays cold this winter and does not warm up and rain like it has the last couple winters. I could do without the ice build up. Excited to try out the big front mount snow blower I bought "for my wife" haha.
