So I thought my girlfriend was going to get me something silly off my amazon list for Christmas. She went out and bought me a badass oil change rig. A huge catch basin on wheels with a pump for draining the oil. Whatís funny about it is she says I always buy her gifts that benefit me. For example, a stand mixer she can use to bake me bread. The first oil change I did was on her car.

Make sure to store it with the piston down. Otherwise it will rust and damage the seals.

Well, found a small plumbing leak under my house which is pier and beam. Called a plumber out to get their opinion and they quoted me a re-pipe job not to exceed $3500. They wouldnít commit to any real number. So, guess Iíll either be doing some plumbing or trying to get another plumber out to see what they say. SMH!

Of all the thing to do on a property as far as taking care of it, plumbing is what I detest the most.

Most plumbing related issues I donít mind handling myself unless it involves sweating copper. I can manage that too but Iíd rather have someone skilled do it as Iíll use too much solder in getting it done. That and I usually have to make way too many trips back/forth for fittings and what-not. In this case, my confidence is a little waning but Iíll probably see if I can just do it myself.

I just opened the door to my sami yesterday for the first time in months. I hate that I have lost the love of working on this for now. I think I just need to get it fixed and running well and I think it will come back. I have had this thing since 99. I then parked it for about 10 years... that was the beginning of all the problems. Ugh.

I've been sparse round here; baby stuff and dealing with grandparents. It's been quite cold lately and I don't have a top for the Sami so it just gets driven around town on the warmer days on cardboard runs.

We had a tire completely fail on our Sidekick last Saturday on the way to some dirt bike races, so I'll be looking for new tires for it in 16". May also get a lift too. Sidekicks don't have very much ground clearance. I was hoping to go another year on the tires as they have enough tread, but the previous owner ran the tires overinflated and they're starting to dry rot, except for the spare, which is brand new, pretty much. I'm thinking size 225/70R16

It seems like every time I need to use a jump pack this is exactly what I run into.

I think my battery is toast. It either hasn't been holding a charge, or there was a parasitic draw (which likely culprit is cheap WalMart radio). Either way, I think the battery froze as it is now bulged.  BS

This is me too lately! Iíve been trying to bike and do stuff outdoors though to keep my sanity.

For a short week, itís sure been a long one.

Iíve seen this done but never have personally. Iím not setup for metal fab but wish I were.

Man, weekend sure went fast. Got a lot of stuff done including some wrenching on my Samurai. Weather was gorgeous so spent a lot of time outdoors.

Seeings as some tires I've been eyeing have dropped in price in the past week, I may pull the trigger on these.

Does anyone know if a 225/75r16 will rub or cause issues for my Sport?  I believe the overall size is ~29.3". I can get one of those basic lift kits (spacer) if that's what I need to get them to fit.

I got a set of tires for cheap for the Samurai today. 235/75R15 Goodyear Wranglers for $60 total. Came on some rims off of who knows what; we'll see if they fit.

235/75R15 are a great tire size on a Samurai.  I don't know what gears you're running, but the 4.16:1 transfer case gears are PERFECT with that size tire (28-29"), assuming the diffs are stock 3.73's.

Looking as far as Minnesota now for laser cutting. In the last 4-5 months prices have doubled and tripled in AZ. Almost everything is waiting for laser pets
To be cut. Odd because steel prices dropped slightly in the same time frame.

Hopefully I get a chance to explore this a little more this year. Right now things are lagging behind because I've been under the weather. The rest of the winter/spring it'll be slow as I'll be supervising a renovation on a rental house (this one won't be a nightmare like the last one) and tag-teaming taking care of the kid until school is done and the wife can be at home full-time.

With tires that size, especially since I got them at such a good price, I may actually be able to get a lift this year. A new soft top is first priority, though. I'm leaving towards the white one from Besttop.

Howdy yall! Start of another week. Was a good weekend. Quality time with kids and spent a lot of time outdoors. Got my old trans dropped and am now ready to pull the old motor this coming weekend. Finally seems like things are shaping up to get my Samurai back in the road. The farther along I get the more excited I am. Still have some hurdles before I am done but forward progress is good.

Know the feeling, been making really slow progress on the stock Samurai. I did get the engine and trans installed yesterday though. Just need to finish the wiring after I get a couple of fenders for it.

I got my battery put back in my Samurai. I think the cheapo Walmart radio that I installed last summer is parasitically draining the battery. I pulled the fuse, let's see if it can sit for a week without a dead battery. As for my tires, I haven't test fitted them yet as first my work truck needs its seats installed first (after new upholstery). The wheels are Ford wheels, but don't know any more than that.

Thinking probably going with just some 3" Trail tough lift springs. I really don't plan on crazy rock climbing, or large tires, plus, I really don't want to go through all the work for a YJ setup. Just swapping four leaf springs is so much less work (and cheaper) that I think that's the route I'll go.

I put Ford pickup aluminum rims on my tintop. The bolt pattern is correct but I had to mill out the centers to clear the hubs. Those are 235s but it had a shackle reverse on it when I got it.

I think the ford aluminum wheels are semi hub and lug centric.  Even on my ford truck the aluminum wheels fit pretty snug but the steel rims just flop on there.

I also got Ford wheels  off of a 1/2 ton 4X4  bolted right  on  no problems maybe they were cut larger  for locking hubs.

Yeah, the lack of responses (along with some life stuff) has kept me from posting. Its a negative snowball effect... as less people post there is less to respond to... which means there are less posts.

I help administer a few Suzuki offroad focused Facebook groups; one with 20K+ world-wide members (a vast majority from the US, then Canada, but a good number from all parts of the world), one that's for the same audience but locally based (Alabama) with 700+ members.  These, along with a few smaller groups, keep me busy.  In an unmoderated group, it can be very difficult for the casual occasional visitor to separate the wheat from the chaff.  Heavily moderated groups usually end up with moderators with particular political/religious/social views that end up driving away members and inhibiting the free-flow of valuable information.  Couple this with Facebook's own political/religious/social views/policies and you end up with lots of headaches that make you wonder if it's all worth the effort.

My chosen career path has me sitting behind a computer screen 45-50 hours per week with opportunity to check group posts multiple times a day, everyday.  You learn to ignore the "chaff" and recognize the "wheat" among posts.  And, you quickly learn which users regularly post useful information.  But, a new user may quickly get discouraged not knowing/learning how to ignore the stupidity.

Funny thing is, I don't particularly like Facebook, especially when it comes to their corporate political/religious/social views.  Attempts have been made at starting up groups in other platforms that are more liberty/freedom based.  But, inertia is a difficult thing to overcome.

So the wheels don't fit, the center hole is too small and the bolt pattern doesn't match up either. No big deal as I can still use the tires and the price was good enough I can sell the aluminum for scrap. I'm fairly certain I'll need a life to get these to fit, bit I will get a tire mounted on one of my wheels first.

I had pulled the radio fuse a couple weeks ago to see if that's what was draining my battery. I didn't have a dead one yesterday so I'd say the $20 Walmart radio is the culprit.

Well, pretty good weekend in spite of both my kids having the flu. So far the wife and I have dodged that bullet.

Worked on building up he new motor and probably wouldíve gotten it installed but when mounting the water log the bolt broke off in the block. Canít extract so will be drilling and tapping new threads once I get the M6 x 1.00 tap I ordered. Noticed some of the other threaded mounts on this rebuilt block arenít in the best shape so ordered the M8 and M10 taps too so that I can run them and clean things up beforehand. Pretty shocked though that whomever ZOR uses for the rebuilds didnít do this as part of their process. No knock on MY or ZOR, just sayin. Pretty disappointing though that Iím having to drill and tap and certainly a setback although a fairly minor one.

Hope yall have a great day/week!

My father in law has an Ď18 canyon Denali v6 so not the duramax. Great truck though and he really likes it. At this point anything duramax is pretty much gold standard for diesel so canít imagine you could go wrong with one in a canyon.

Yea, no doubt. LOL though as for some reason when I read this the first thing to pop into my head was; how cool or odd would it be to create a mid-engine Sami to distribute the weight.

Well, I think I just have a weak battery, and the radio just accelerated the draining issue. With having to drop the baby off at the care provider, the Samurai isn't getting driven much this winter. Sidekick is, though! I still haven't had a chance to see if my new tires fit. I did get one mounted onto my Samurai rim, though. One step at a time!

CBs are awesome. Still have a few and a set from early nineties that have magnetic antennas to attach to the roof of the car. I donít use them often however I feel like they still have a place and purpose even today.

Got my water log mount drilled and tapped over the weekend. Also ran a tap in all the other mounts on the block. Crazy how much junk came out of those threads. Some cheap insurance and peace of mind going forward with my build. While I have everything out I decided to prime and paint the motor mount brackets and the alternator bracket. Also replacing old fuel hose and in general, anything that looks worn or rotten. Iím thinking about replacing the old heater hoses with some generic gates heater hose but not sure if thatís a good idea or not.

I got my factory wheel with 235/75/15 put on last night to see if it'd even fit. It fits, but I don't think I could really drive it without it rubbing the bumper during flexing. I pretty much knew that'd be the case and now I'm working myself into probably getting some 2" lift leafs. I honestly don't foresee getting tires too big, so this should suit me just fine.

I think CB's are a holdover from a bygone era. Not too much use nowadays. You can get handhelds with plenty enough range for most applications.

hello everyone,

I have CBs in some of my rigs. I never use them unless I see some of my friends in dump trucks or my friend with a ramp truck. we used to have them in all of our vehicles when I was in college.

work has been busy, winter sucked. Looks like Ill be getting my samurai out next time i go home, I already started putting the snowmobiles away. Took out the four wheeler to do some chores while I was home. I picked up a Polaris 120 snowmobile for my 3 year old boy and he loves it. he cant reach the floor boards with both feet yet but He will be wanting a bigger motor next year when his hands are big enough to hold on and use the controls and he is a little taller. he is already holding it wide open. Its just as much fun watching him ride around than it is snowmobiling myself.

Got my eBay aluminum radiator and silicon hoses (well... about 1/2 the hoses :-) ) installed Saturday.  Took the top and doors off and took it for a spin.  Realized quickly that 60F is still a little chilly for no top & doors.  Joined two other Samurais, 5 Yotas, and a Jeep for an afternoon ride yesterday.  Mostly just dirt road cruising, a few mud holes (one that turned out to be much deeper than I expected - had to get winched out), and some fun hill climbs.  'Twas a good day.

I had a shop built 3 years ago.  30x36 on 6" slab plus 10x36 side shed over dirt.  I added warehouse racks that I picked up cheap on one wall.  After only 3 years, it's in near total disarray. :-(  At least I have been able to keep the piles of junk from creeping into the center section and I can still get two vehicles in there.

I am running Sprung under 3" lift with a drop pitman arm. I am thinking my tie rods may be toast so I was thinking of replacing them and potentially updating the steering. I don't wheel hard, mostly daily drive with light-medium offroading. Anyone have ideas on good products? I'm not sure if an OTT steering kit would be beneficial or a waste of money now. Anyone have ideas?

ZOR sells a spring under kit.
I saw that! Super beefy! Seems like it may be overkill but I have it on my short list. I see the trail Gear OTT kit everywhere and figure I could get it cheaper if I scrounge enough. Just don't know the fesability of running an OTT while still being sprung under.
Petroworks also makes a stock style one that uses the FJ80 tie rod ends as well.

Edit to add this:

My thought on why an OTT may be nice even with my sprung under- in conjunction with the drop pittman arm it should get that drag link pretty level. But I just don't know.

We had nice 50 degree days, and then it snowed a foot of heavy wet snow knocking power out to 2/3rds of the state.

In other news, I replied to an ad someone was looking for a hub for a samurai. Turns out it was for my friends samurai he had bought in 2008. It was cool to see it again.

That foot of heavy snow sucked. Ground was way too soft to plow, had to snowmobile up and down my driveway till the snow melted enough. I did some used my samurai some while I was home. I usually have the hard top on just for storage but I bolted it down for riding around. with no day care my big projects have been on hold. Managed to put together a dirt bike that I've had the cases split on my bench for the last 8 months. Its a miracle that I was able to find all of the pieces. It came out good and I was able to ride that some before the snow.

now I am back at work. no virus yet. they changed our rotation to 4 weeks. next time I go home for 4 weeks will be nice. even if its still in quarantine.

Got the transmission in this weekend!
Also working on the wiring. I bought this and am going to move my starter relay to it. I also plan to relay my offroad lights, headlights, and fan (when I install my electrical fan). This should make the engine bay a lot nicer looking.

That is the exact one I bought. Seems like its constructed super well. What I want to do is put a bus bar between two of the mounting bolts to use as a ground source for more things. What I did in the meantime...

I linked the positive input of all the fuses and running one wire directly to the battery. Each fuse is linked to a relay (obviously). The relay ground is ring terminaled between the mounting leg and the nylok bolt (nylok bolts included with the kit). I did a cable from the battery to a mounting bolt and then I ring terminaled that bolt to another mounting bolt, and that one to another. In essence I linked all the mounting bolts together. This has the effect of grounding the 4 mounting bolts to the battery.
I'll try to get a picture to better show what I am talking about.

This is what my relay box looks like. I am in the process of making the wiring look better in the engine bay- which led to this mod.
Next to wire up headlight relays.

My COVID19 project has been a dirt bike that I've had apart on my bench for 8 months. full disassembly and painted frame. It had a stuck transmission and some broken gears. I mismatched parts from other year bikes because parts are not available for this one year bike. It was satisfying bringing something back to life that was pronounced dead. I was ready to part it out when I could not find parts for it. took a lot of research and ordering a few extra parts that did not fit to make it work. 1985 XR350R

Also, if you want to learn from my mistake... I think it is fine to wire pin 30 like i did (relay to one end of the fuse location, on the other side I linked the other fuses together with only one common wire heading from box to positive post)... BUT- Where I messed up was I had linked a common ground to all the relays. That turned out to be a dumb idea. It worked for my starter and may work for other things. It did not work for my headlights.

I am also going to install a positive distribution box so I can run positive wires to that instead of to the battery.

Title: Re: 2020 is here. Enjoy it!

It didnt work for the headlights because of the way they switch. The have a common hot and a switched ground for high and low beam.

That is my guess as well. I attempted to just add a relay into the existing wires not rewire for positive switch lights. So, because of that the ground from the relay was redundant.
I still haven't been able to check to see if my brights work. BUT... I think I have it wired backwards (low beam stalk position = High beams and vica-versa). I am not 100% sure though because I forgot to check them last night during the dark. If/when I get this fixed and can post HOW I hooked everything up.

I think that's true. Not sure you need much more though. Relays do not weigh that much and you have 4 solid connections holding onto it, I wouldn't worry about them coming off.

Hey Suzuki fam, hope yall are doing good! Been super busy and havenít gotten to post much in the last month or so.

Iím eyeing the rock smasher setup too and am probably going to order one soon.

Been making some progress on my ZUK. Seems like 3 steps forward and 1 step back for the past couple of months but today I finally got my rebuilt motor and transmission dropped in. Did them together thanks to the leveler my cherry picker came with. Got the drive-line and about half of the hoses and what not connected. Still need to mount my AC compressor, install the new aluminum radiator, get fan installed and lastly- get the screamin eagle carb mated up to the MS2. Admittedly, this has taken me longer than I like to get done but Iím literally going thru everything along the way and addressing everything I can while I have the opportunity to. Attached a few pics. Yall stay well!

Iíve got some various paint rigs I could use but will likely go the rattle can route. Will definitely wipe everything down with solvent first and put a base coat of etching primer first.

That's exactly what I did. I sanded quickly with 80 grit, wiped with solvent (I ran out so it may not have gotten everything off), rattle can of self etching primer, and then flat black. I needed it done last night so I only did two coats of primer and 2 coats of paint. I know heim joints are not DOT approved so I figured black would not draw attention to it.

I have been fiddling with gear calculations this morning and not sure I understand how to properly read them. At this point I am doing 55 in 5th gear at about 4000 RPM (also in 4th gear at 3000rpm I am doing about 35mph). I am wondering if that sounds correct?

My set up:
I have an earlier samurai transmission
4.16 gears in transfer case
5.125 in diffs
31" tires

A gearing calculator that I think confirms that this would be normal based on my set up.

The best gear tool I've found is http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html.

It has two columns with forms where you can compare side-by-side setups.  I like to enter all stock entries on the left, including 205/70R15 tires, then click "Copy form" to fill in the right.  Then, play with different t-case, differential, and tire size on the right to see how it compares to stock numbers.

Howís everybody doing? Man, dog days of summer are definitely upon us!

Next for me is figuring out what top to go with. Either a replacement soft top and top bow as mine is long gone. Alternatively, maybe a rally top as Iíve always wanted a hard top for my ZUK. I think Iíd rather get the one piece but then thereís rumors of stress cracks. My tailgate too has a very slight warp too so not sure whether the top would seal properly on it. Thoughts?

On another note, here are some long overdo under-hood shots of everything installed and done. Iíve replaced motors and transmissions and done a lot of wrenching in my life but renewing my ZUK has hands down been the most rewarding and enjoyable!

I don't think I can salvage my battery, but I was able to make the battery from my Camaro fit into the tray of the Samurai. I also got the rear seat installed again so I can take kids on rides on the trails by the house and got the flimsy stock bumper off. I had no idea how flimsy it was or that it was only held on with four bolts. Now to figure out what will replace it!

I just barely had tire rub on the factory bumper mount with 235/74/15, 28" tire, so I cut them off this morning. I have it pretty much figured out what bumper I want, but my truck broke down again last night (fuel pump this time), and I had to get a tow and will have to pay to get it repaired.

I like my ralley top. I have the two piece with the sport back and keeps the wind noise out, heat in, and rear piece is easy to remove, I leave the front piece on like a bikini top. The only thing I don't like about the two piece hard top is that you have to use silicone to seal the front making it difficult to remove.

Thanks! I remember this and had revisited it a few weeks ago too when digging thru the threads here on ZORUM looking for hard top info/feedback.

My big concern is the fact that I have a slight inward warp in my tailgate. It's very slight but I don't know how or if it would affect the hard top closing/sealing.

Good looking rig. I don't think the slightly pushed in tailgate would be too big of a deal. The door for the top sits flush with the top of the tailgate. As long as it's not pushed up much and mainly in. I'll see if I can attach a couple pics so you can see how it sits. There's a rubber seal along the bottom of the door to seal to tailgate.

Thank you and I appreciate the pics. Looks as if that hard top might work out for me with the way it sits/seals. On my rig it looks like the first owner either backed into something against the spare or someone nudged it from behind on the spare so put a slight inward warp in the tailgate.

I'm running that kit...  I highly recommend it.  I wanted to keep the COG as low as possible.  So, I'm SPUA with 2.5" OME YJ springs and 31's on 15x8 wheels with 2.5" backspacing.  I had to trim the front fenders just a bit.  The flex is SO NICE (after the springs broke in a little).  Keeps the rubber on the rocks.  Mini spool rear and Lock-Rite front.  The rig's capabilities are beyond my driving skills/courage.  It'll take me where I want to go.

That's the thing. I want a lift, but I only want to buy one once. YJ is the smoothest without a doubt, but I'm not sure I need it. I want the CG as low as I can get it and to be able to drive it on the road without it getting too squirley; it's not going to be a hardcore off-road machine or anything.

I'm with you on that.  A stock samurai goes 98% of the places I want.   I want to keep mine lowish, and add some lockers.  I think that will get me the the latest 2%

I have a friend who rode in my Samurai and got hooked, then got his own. 87 tintop. It's got a small lift on it, but I'm not sure what it is. The only thing I could find is a sticker on the leafs that says "Made in Canada". Is it about a 3"? I did notice it rides noticeably smoother than my stock Samurai. 28" tires.

For me, a small lift that'll fit 30" tires is the perfect setup. The YJ SPUA would just be the cadillac option so to speak; just enough lift while smoothing the ride out. Or at least imho anyway.

Stoked to say that I've added a ZOR rock smasher and low profile winch bumper to my Suzuki arsenal a few weeks ago. Got the rock smasher scuffed, cleaned, etch-primed and painted and it's ready to install in a day or two when I find time to go to the parts store and get a pitman arm puller loaner. Did the same for the bumper and took my time scuffing and cleaning it. Spent weekend before last doing gradual/multiple coats of etching primer then this past weekend applied multiple coats of flat black enamel. Left it hanging to dry for 24 hours thinking I would install the next evening but to my dismay, a quarter of the paint sloughed off like nothing when just taking a glove across it. I am all about DIY but I talked to a local powder coater who for $150 will blast it clean again and put a matte black coat on it for me. Was trying to avoid going this route but just want it done.

Hope everyone out there is doing good! Don't forget to vote - Trump FTW!
