Rear wheel bearing retainer removal tips and tricks?
« on: May 10, 2018, 07:05:23 PM »

Stock axles. Just looking for advice on removing the rear retainers. The current plan is to grind thin and chisel them off. Any ideas on how to make this process suck less?

First time into the rear end of her, so any advice on lubes or speed of attack would be appreciated. I think a peck on the cheek and maybe a quick cuddle afterwards would probably be appreciated. Living in rural Montana, I am more familiar with the sheep than I am with Samurai rear ends.

That's the way I do it, too.  One thing I'd suggest while you're in there is to do the SJ410 backing plate modification.  It doesn't make removing the retainers any easier, but does make dealing with the rear shafts easier in general.

Yes, definitely doing the SJ410. Ordered a set from Roadless Gear. Hoping to have everything in place to start tomorrow.

Bearings done and SJ410 plates installed. The passenger side bearing was so bad that when we pulled the axle, the balls just fell out onto the ground. No wonder it was making noise. Brake backing plate was too large in diameter for the drill press, so had to do the drilling with the hand drill.
