4.16:1 for 215/75r15 tires
« on: April 08, 2019, 03:39:55 AM »

I'm thinking of going up from the stock tire size to 215/75r15 and wonder if installing a 4.16:1 gear set would be overkill?
I do drive on the highway so being able to cruise at 70mph is a pretty big priority.

If your car canít run 215 with stock gearing you should consider doing a compression test. Yes a bit of overkill if the engine is strong. Your engine would be 10-12% higher revving for same speed. The

based on the year of your Samurai you iight want to consider a trans upgrade to the lower fifth gear. That would help more for the 215 than reduction in the case.

The engine runs like a sewing machine and has great compression.
I have not purchased tires yet so I don't want to get screwed and make 5Th gear useless.
I'm very happy with the stock size but not happy with the lack of tire choices.
would 235/75r15 be a better choice for the 4.16:1 gears?

MY is the expert and can speak to this better than I can but from my understanding, unless you're getting into a 30" or above tire, the 4:16 gear set is not recommended.

From my experience, 4.16 gears were PERFECT with 235/75R15 (28.8") tires and stock 3.73 diffs.  I wheeled and DD'd that setup for a couple years before going to 31" tires.  Once I moved to 31's, 5th gear was for downhill runs only.  So, I now run the 4.16 tcase AND 4.30 diffs and am very happy with it.

NOTE:  I do have the earlier trans with the higher 5th.  I'm sure the later trans with the lower 5th would have been noticeably better on the road.
